The "Baaghbaan" post

Today, as I was sorting out another squabble between my parents, I realised – they are turning into siblings. Which makes me terribly angry at times but mostly mellow with a strange happy-sad emotion.

Maybe, because I have started to think of my parents’ marriage as how marriages should be – and how all couples should be.

I think they survived 35 years of marriage and are still going strong because:

  • they TALK……………about all the things their lives touched or touches
  • they argue ……but decide to make up within 24 hours without bothering who will make the first move to apologise
  • they never force their religious beliefs on each other
  • they respect each others intelligence by flaunting each other’s talents
  • they keep the money-discussions very transparent; till the last penny!
  • they show their affection without any restraint – a tight hug and kiss has been the accepted greeting
  • they keep the humour going – even after a fight
  • they are each other’s support at all times

(and in retrospect…)

  • they changed themselves for each other
  • they decided they will take off for a vacation once a year – money or no money
  • they accepted each other’s parents with all their flaws – maybe not happily but never flinched either
  • they accepted very early in life that in the end, it is each other who will matter to them - rest of the things/people will come and go

and of course, because:

  • they belong to the ingenuous generation where phrases such as “women’s lib”, “I need my space”, or “quality time” “double income no kids” – were not yet born.

Perceptive...

Simple and works like a dream...I know..even with those "phrases" embraced and practiced...

Classic this one!

Made me think about my parents.

I guess the last point really did the trick here, and now they are so set in their ways, that the doubts, the "what ifs" never surfaced or, even if they did, made an impact.

Good post!

If I may add, they dint have reality TV and soaps to ruin their perspective
