My three year old nephew opened my eyes to a whole lot of things which I was absolutely unaware of…for example ‘Beyblade’ and 'Oswald'.
As much as I looked perplexed with these words…he too seemed dissapointed with my ignorance. I am his number one fan and it broke my heart to ‘let him down’.
I tried some really conventional tricks like ‘jhootey-maatey’ (which is when u make a swing out of your own body thinking u are still agile but instead it backfires and completely fires your back. For more info on ‘jhootey-maatey’, plz check with punju parents/grandparents).
So, in effect, he left me feeling totally OLD!
And just when I was pondering over something ‘youngish’ to do…two of my friends attacked me with pleas to go to this concert at IIM-B where Kailash Kher and Lucky Ali were performing. I was almost immediately tempted because of the following reasons-
- I have never been to a live concert (ok, u can stop gasping.)
- I was once head-over-heels a Lucky Ali fan because I think he is one of the few who can pull it off even when he is really out of tune. And his ‘Tu kaun hai’ gives me goose bumps still.
- I wanted to go ‘check-out’ IIM-B crowd.
- The ticket was cheap.
- It was a stone’s throw from my house.
- I thought it would be a cool experience to hear ‘Allah ke Bande’ live as that was all the words 'Kailash Kher' meant for me.
So, me and two more frnds landed at IIM-B in time to attend the concert.
(I dunno colleges are so buzzing with energy that you can feel it hitting you the moment you step into any campus. And it only makes you regret the decision of getting into the ‘work’ grind so early in life…missing out on the univ life….*sigh*)
Anyway, the place pretty much looked ‘college fest concert’ish'..in other words, no chairs, cheap stage set up, not-so-good acoustics .. screaming aloud ‘itne paise mein itnaa hee milenga’!
After waiting for not so long Kailash Kher was on stage…which a lot of ppl did not even notice as not many ppl cheered..(not their fault…he is kinda ‘tiny’). So, he abruptly started singing ‘Teri Diwani’ and immediately got the ppl going. Fortunately, not many had ppl turned up for the concert and we got to see the 'tiny man' from a place closer to the stage.
I must say I have become quite a Kailash Kher fan…he has a superb voice quality and is very endearing with his cute ‘very himachali’ accent
(Excerpt- “Aap lok bade hi piyaare hain, toh yeh jo song hai , main aapko daddy-kate karta hun")
Then he sang a few from his album ‘Kailasa’ which have a lot of Punjabi lyrics and I am not sure how many really got 'em…but he managed to hold the crowd together and ended his performance with ‘Allah ke bande’ and those were truly the 'paisa vasool' moments.
And as luck has it…nothing can be perfect we had the misfortune of watching another live show simultaneously…a couple bang in front of us thought they were at MTV Grind and were ‘grinding’ to anything and everything …! Right from the filler music to classical numbers.
FOR GOD’S SAKE PPL...!
Then, as we waited patiently for Lucky Ali, our patience was actually wearing out…..watching his videos on the screens instead of watching him LIVE.
He finally arrived in a black sweat shirt and torn jeans looking really tired and his stubble doing no good job of hiding his haggard face.
He started with a really lame joke about plastic surgery or something and lost all his marks there. The people were almost prepared to boo him!
He sang O Sanam to save his soul and then went on with some I had not really heard.
With a lot of sadness in my heart, I have to say ….‘Kailasa’ won hands down!
As he started to belt some sobby and mushy numbers…. one of the two friends I had come had a red nose and looked like she was about to cry buckets (Apparently, she is either going to or has just been dumped by her boyfriend). To save myself from the consoling act (which I am really bad at), we decided to leave.
Don’t know how young or old I felt after the concert but I wish i can attend more live performances in future!

Great write up about the live show experience. I agree that Kailash Kher does have a good voice. Another very soulful number of recent times was "Tere Bin" from Bas Ek Pal.
